The Historical Tapestry of Marrakech

From Neolithic times, Berber farmers lived in the Marrakesh region, and various stone tools have been discovered there. Abu Bakr ibn Umar, a leader and the second cousin of the Almoravid monarch Yusuf ibn Tashfin, established Marrakesh (c. 1061–1106).

According to historical sources, this incident occurred between the years 1062 (454 in the Hijri calendar), as reported by Ibn Abi Zar and Ibn Khaldun, and 1078 (470 AH), as reported by Muhammad al-Idrisi. The time period that modern historians most frequently accept is 1070.

Even yet, some authors continue to use the number 1062. The Almoravids were a Berber dynasty that governed an emirate that extended from the Atlantic coast to Algiers and from the edge of Senegal to the center of Spain.

They made Marrakesh their capital and built the city’s initial buildings, such as mosques and the fortified Ksar al-Hajjar, which is located close to the modern Kutubiyya Mosque.

The design and urban planning of the city were likewise affected by these Almoravid foundations for many centuries to come.
